Panic swept through the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk on Monday night after reports of gunfire in a nearby parking lot sent visitors fleeing the popular seaside amusement park.
Santa Cruz police said officers responded shortly after 9 p.m. to reports of a fight and shots fired across the street from the park entrance, near the Casino Arcade.
According to police, at least five shots were fired, but no one was struck, and no injuries were reported. Officials said the scene was secured within a short time and that there was no continuing danger to the public. As of late Monday, no arrests had been made, and the investigation remained active.
What Witnesses Described
Video shared with local news outlets showed a heavy police presence, with multiple patrol vehicles gathered near the Boardwalk entrance as officers worked to clear the area. Several witnesses said they heard three or four loud bangs coming from the direction of the parking lot, while others said they never heard gunfire themselves but ran after seeing the surrounding crowd bolt in fear.
One visitor told reporters he was waiting in line for a ride with family members when a park employee rushed by, warning guests to leave the area immediately. As panic spread, he said he helped guide people out calmly so no one would be trampled in the chaos, and his group eventually made it out safely without seeing any confrontation.
Other accounts described employees halting rides mid-operation and steering guests into maintenance corridors, retail shops and other secure spaces before leading them out through back exits. One person said guests waiting for a rollercoaster were moved inside the ride building and escorted out through a rear door, while another said nearby staff directed people into a basement for shelter.
Company and Police Response
The Santa Cruz Seaside Company, which operates the Boardwalk, said in a statement that it was continuing to gather information and working closely with the Santa Cruz Police Department as the investigation unfolds. The company reiterated that no one was struck by gunfire, no injuries were reported, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Police have asked anyone with information about the incident to contact the Santa Cruz Police Department’s Investigations Unit. The Boardwalk had been hosting its nightly summer entertainment lineup at the time of the incident.
