Cristina Ulbrich, wife of Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, has died following a battle with cancer. The team confirmed her passing on Thursday, just as the Falcons opened training camp without their defensive leader on the field.
Jeff Ulbrich had been away from the team since the start of camp this week, citing a personal matter. The Falcons did not disclose details at the time, but the announcement Thursday night made clear the reason behind his absence.
Falcons Organization Honors Cristina’s Memory
In a statement released by the team, the Falcons described Cristina as a devoted wife, mother and friend whose strength and grace touched everyone who knew her. The organization said she had been a constant source of love and support not only for Jeff but for their family and the wider Falcons community.
The team asked that the Ulbrich family’s privacy be respected during this time of grieving, while offering its support and remembrance of Cristina’s life.
Falcons owner Arthur Blank also issued a personal tribute, saying it was always clear how deeply Cristina loved her family and how fiercely she supported them.
Blank praised her courage and strength, noting that she faced every challenge with extraordinary grace and inspired many through both how she lived and how she fought her illness. He extended his family’s love and prayers to everyone mourning her loss, alongside the entire Falcons organization.
Jeff Ulbrich’s Journey With the Falcons
Jeff and Cristina’s story with the Falcons organization runs deep. The couple first met back in 1997 when Jeff was on a recruiting visit to the University of Hawaii, where he went on to play three seasons before spending a decade in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers. Together, the couple built a family that includes three children.
Jeff’s coaching career has been closely tied to Atlanta. He first joined the Falcons’ coaching staff in 2015 and remained through 2020, a stretch that included the franchise’s run to Super Bowl LI.
After a stint as interim head coach and defensive coordinator with the New York Jets, he returned to Atlanta last season to take over as defensive coordinator once again.
His impact on the field was significant. Under his leadership, the Falcons defense set a franchise record with 57 sacks last season, a performance that convinced owner Arthur Blank to push new head coach Kevin Stefanski to retain him for the 2026 season.
