Caswell County, NC: Sheriff Says Shooter Among Three Killed in Wednesday Shooting

August 6, 2026 caswell county shooting

Three people are dead, and another is hospitalized after a shooting inside a family home in Caswell County, North Carolina, on Wednesday morning.

Caswell County deputies were called to a residence in the 300 block of Brooks Road in Prospect Hill just before 8 a.m. When they arrived, they found four people who had been shot.

Three of them died at the scene, including the person believed to have opened fire. The fourth victim was taken to Duke University Hospital, though their condition has not been made public.

Sheriff Tony Durden confirmed during an afternoon news conference that all four people involved were adults and members of the same family.

He said the shooting appeared to have happened outside the home rather than inside it, though investigators are still piecing together exactly what occurred.

Durden also noted there was no indication the family had contacted his office for help before the violence broke out.

Investigation led by state bureau

Because of the severity of the case, the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office asked the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to step in. SBI agents are now on scene collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses alongside county deputies.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Prospect Hill Fire Department, Caswell County EMS and the Person County Sheriff’s Office are also assisting with the response.

Officials have not released the names of the victims or the suspected shooter. Durden said the sheriff’s office is still working to notify next of kin and will not identify anyone involved until that process is complete.

Authorities have stressed that the public is not in danger. Investigators say the violence was confined entirely to the property on Brooks Road and was not part of any broader threat to the community.

“This was an isolated incident and please keep the family in your prayers,” Durden said.

Caswell County, a rural area in north-central North Carolina near the Virginia border, rarely sees violence on this scale. Wednesday’s shooting has shaken the small community of Prospect Hill, where neighbors gathered near the scene as investigators worked throughout the day.

The sheriff’s office says it will release additional details, including the identities of those involved and what led up to the shooting, as the investigation moves forward. For now, officials are asking residents to be patient while the SBI completes its work.

This is a developing story and will likely be updated as more information becomes available from investigators.
