A tense standoff in Isanti, Minnesota came to a peaceful end Wednesday night after police took a suspect into custody following reports of gunfire from inside a home earlier in the day.
The Isanti County Sheriff’s Office, working alongside the Isanti Police Department, responded to the 800 block of Cedar Street Southwest around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday after receiving reports that someone was firing a gun from inside a residence. Authorities said the situation was believed to be immediately life-threatening to anyone caught outside near the home, and residents in the surrounding area were told to stay indoors and avoid the block entirely.
Evacuations and a Long Wait
Isanti Mayor Luke Merrill said everyone living near the scene was evacuated as officers worked to contain the situation. He confirmed that at least one person had fired a weapon during the incident.
For hours, police kept the area locked down while they tried to bring the standoff to a safe conclusion, and officials asked the public to stay clear so law enforcement could secure the scene without putting bystanders at risk.
Details were scarce for much of the afternoon and evening. Police did not immediately say who was involved, what led up to the shooting, or whether anyone inside the home was hurt. That uncertainty stretched on for more than six hours as negotiators and officers worked the scene.
Standoff Ends Without Injury
Just before 10 p.m., the Isanti County Sheriff’s Office announced that a suspect had been taken into custody and that the ordeal was finally over. Officials said no one, neither civilians nor law enforcement, was injured during the incident.
With the suspect in custody, authorities lifted the restrictions on the area and told residents they could safely return to their homes.
The sheriff’s office said more information would be released at a later time, though as of early Thursday morning, few additional details had been shared publicly about the identity of the suspect or what sparked the gunfire in the first place.
Isanti, a small city located roughly 40 miles north of Minneapolis, does not typically see this kind of prolonged police activity, and the hours-long lockdown drew significant attention from residents and local media throughout Wednesday evening. Law enforcement has not indicated whether any charges have been filed in connection with the incident.
