Hey friends! It’s Hannah from Belle on the Boardwalk, and if there’s one place in Sarasota that instantly slows me down and makes me appreciate Florida’s natural beauty, it’s Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.
I’ve visited these gardens in every season—from peaceful spring mornings filled with blooming orchids to magical December nights during Lights in Bloom, and every trip feels a little different. One thing never changes, though: the moment you walk through the gates, the noise of everyday life seems to disappear.
With tropical gardens overlooking Sarasota Bay, incredible orchid collections, family-friendly attractions, and even a second campus filled with local history, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is much more than a place to look at plants. It’s an experience.
If you’re planning a Sarasota getaway, spending a weekend on the Gulf Coast, or looking for one of the best things to do with kids in Sarasota, this guide has everything you need to know.
Why Visit Marie Selby Botanical Gardens?
Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is famous for its world-renowned collection of orchids and epiphytes, often called “air plants.” But honestly? The real magic is how many different experiences are packed into one destination.
You can:
- Wander through tropical gardens overlooking Sarasota Bay.
- Let the kids explore the Children’s Rainforest Garden.
- Discover rotating art exhibits in the Museum of Botany & the Arts.
- Enjoy lunch surrounded by lush greenery.
- Spend an evening under millions of holiday lights during Lights in Bloom®.
The gardens also have two unique campuses:
- Downtown Sarasota Campus – the iconic bayfront gardens.
- Historic Spanish Point Campus – a quieter property filled with history, nature trails, and coastal scenery.
If you’re exploring Sarasota, I also recommend pairing your visit with a trip to the Sarasota Art Museum or a sunset at Siesta Key Beach, both of which are among my favorite local spots on Belle on the Boardwalk.
Downtown Sarasota Campus

1534 Mound Street

The gardens sit right on Sarasota Bay, just south of downtown and about a 15-20 minute drive from Siesta Key.

I usually recommend arriving early in the morning. The gardens are quieter, the temperatures are cooler, and the light is absolutely gorgeous for photos.
Historic Spanish Point Campus
If you’re someone who loves hidden gems and places with fewer crowds, don’t skip Historic Spanish Point.
Located in Osprey along the Intracoastal Waterway, this campus feels completely different from Downtown Selby.
Instead of tropical display gardens, you’ll find:
- Coastal habitats
- Historic homes and structures
- Archaeological sites
- Peaceful walking trails
- Beautiful waterfront views
It’s one of those places where you can truly slow down and enjoy Old Florida.

Things You Absolutely Shouldn’t Miss
1. Orchid & Air Plant Collections
Selby is home to more than 6,000 orchids, along with one of the world’s most important collections of epiphytes.
Even if you’re not a “plant person,” it’s hard not to be amazed by the colors, shapes, and sheer variety.
This is also one of my favorite places in Sarasota for photography.
2. Children’s Rainforest Garden
Traveling with kids?
This area is fantastic.
There are:
- Elevated walkways
- Rainforest-inspired play areas
- Interactive exhibits
- Hands-on activities
It’s educational without feeling like a lesson—which, as a parent or grandparent, is always a win.
3. Museum of Botany & the Arts
I love that Selby mixes nature and art together.
The museum regularly hosts exhibitions inspired by plants, conservation, and design.
Just remember that the museum closes at 4:30 p.m., so plan accordingly.
4. Historic Selby House & Bayfront Lawn
This may actually be my favorite spot in the entire garden.
Grab a coffee, sit beneath the trees, and watch the boats drift across Sarasota Bay.
It’s peaceful, beautiful, and one of those places that reminds you why people fall in love with Florida.
5. Dining at the Gardens
Selby House Café
Perfect for:
- Coffee
- Snacks
- Light bites
Green Orchid Restaurant
A wonderful option if you’d like to enjoy a full meal without leaving the gardens.
Why You Should Visit Historic Spanish Point Too
Many visitors only experience the Downtown campus, but Historic Spanish Point deserves some love.
You’ll find:
- Coastal habitats
- Historic buildings
- Archaeological features
- Waterfront scenery
- Fewer crowds
- Quiet walking paths
It’s the perfect place for anyone who enjoys history, nature, and a slower pace.
