A Walmart employee is recovering after being shot during an argument between two customers at a store in Glenolden, Pennsylvania, according to police.
The shooting happened Friday night, July 31, around 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Walmart location on North MacDade Boulevard in Darby Township. Officers were called after multiple reports of gunfire inside the busy retail location.
Darby Township Police said two men got into a dispute inside the store when one of them produced a firearm and fired between five and 10 shots before running out of the building.
A female employee was struck once in the calf. She was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia, and authorities say her injuries are not considered life-threatening. No customers were hurt in the incident.
Chaos and Fear Inside the Store
Witnesses described panic spreading through the aisles as gunfire rang out. Shoppers ran toward the back of the store, and employees helped usher customers to safety as the building was placed on a temporary lockdown that lasted roughly an hour. Several people recalled hearing loud bangs that sounded close by, followed by a rush of people fleeing toward the exits.
One shopper said she had been in the store with a young child when the shots were fired and described the tense wait as customers were moved to the rear of the building. Another witness recounted comforting a woman who became overwhelmed with panic during the chaos.
Video and images from the scene showed a shattered glass door near the store’s entrance, along with a heavy police presence surrounding the parking lot.
Search for Suspect Continues
The gunman fled before officers arrived and remains at large. Police have described him only as a Black man wearing an orange hooded sweatshirt and gray sweatpants. Investigators say several people were briefly detained for questioning but were not necessarily considered suspects in the shooting.
The Delaware County District Attorney’s Office said it is working to identify the shooter and stressed that the incident is believed to be isolated, stemming solely from the argument between the two customers. Officials emphasized there is no ongoing threat to the surrounding community.
The Walmart store was closed Friday night as investigators processed the scene, with police expected to release additional details, including a photo of the suspect, in the following days.
No arrests had been made as of early Saturday morning, and the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information about the shooting or the suspect’s whereabouts is asked to contact Darby Township police.
