Levi Wyatt Jr., a former Jackson State University football player, was killed early Saturday morning in a car crash in Jackson, Mississippi. He was 23.
The Hinds County Coroner’s Office identified Wyatt as the victim. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Details of the Crash
Mississippi Department of Public Safety officials said Capitol Police responded to the crash at the intersection of North State Street and Belhaven Street late Friday night, with some reports placing the collision around 11:40 p.m. and others noting officers arrived just after midnight Saturday. Two vehicles were involved.
Wyatt was driving a Chevrolet Camaro that also struck a utility pole during the collision. He suffered fatal injuries in the crash. A passenger riding with him was taken to a hospital with injuries described as life-threatening. The driver of the second vehicle involved was not hurt.
Capitol Police and the Mississippi Highway Patrol are both investigating the crash. Authorities have not released information about what caused the collision or whether any additional vehicles played a role.
Officials describe the case as an active and ongoing investigation, and no further details had been made public as of Saturday afternoon.
Wyatt’s Football Career
Wyatt, a native of Vicksburg, spent his final college season as a defensive back for Jackson State. He had entered the 2026 NFL Draft process earlier this year after wrapping up his time with the Tigers.
Before arriving at Jackson State, Wyatt built a college football resume that took him through several programs. He played at McNeese State, where he was named to the 2024 All-Southland Conference Second Team and received recognition on Phil Steele’s all-conference list. That season, he appeared in 12 games and posted 33 tackles, two tackles for loss, eight pass breakups and a forced fumble.
Wyatt’s path to McNeese State ran through Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, and he began his football career at Holmes County Central High School.
Jackson State’s football program issued a statement Saturday afternoon honoring Wyatt as part of the team’s family. The program said the bond among teammates does not end when a game ends, and asked supporters to keep Wyatt’s family and loved ones in their thoughts during a difficult time.
Tributes from teammates, coaches and fans have continued to circulate since news of his death broke, with many remembering him for his work ethic and the role he played on multiple teams throughout his college career.
No arrests or citations connected to the crash had been announced as of the latest update. Authorities have asked anyone with information about the collision to come forward as the investigation continues.
