A South Bend community is grieving the loss of Hannah Zweig, a Life Skills teacher at Adams High School, and her brother Yosef, who died together in an accident in Michigan.
News of their deaths spread quickly this week, with former students, coworkers, and friends sharing memories of two people known for their warmth and dedication to others.
Zweig had only recently begun her teaching career but had already made a lasting impression.
South Bend Schools had named her Rookie Teacher of the Year, recognizing the impact she made with students who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. Colleagues say her commitment to those students went far beyond the classroom.
A Passion for Advocacy
Journalist Joshua Short, who worked with Zweig on a story about an “Adams Teacher Prom-posal,” wrote about her passion for advocacy in a tribute post.
He said the two had been planning to collaborate on another story spotlighting the disability community, a cause they both cared about deeply. That project will no longer happen, he wrote, adding that he learned of her death along with her brother’s on the same day.
Short also described the close bond between Hannah and Yosef, calling him not just her brother but her best friend. He said she was his biggest advocate, and that in the wake of the tragedy, he takes some comfort in knowing the siblings are together.

Tributes poured in from people connected to Zweig through her work at the YMCA of Greater Michiana and The O’Brien Center, where she was reportedly training to become an instructor focused on helping people with disabilities improve their health. Coworkers there called her passionate and devoted, saying she wanted to make fitness and wellness accessible to everyone.
Others who knew her through family connections or chance encounters at the gym described her as kind, genuine, and easy to talk to. Several commenters extended condolences to the Zweig family and said the siblings would be deeply missed by everyone who crossed their paths.
